Experience Mt Kuring-Gai's 4/5 class

Jul

Hi,

From now on, I would like to give homework out on a Thursday and collect it on the following Wednesday. This way students will have more time to complete the tasks and I will be able to conduct spelling tests on a Wednesday. I have made some changes to our class timetable and feel that the best time slot for conducting the spelling tests is on Wednesdays. If you have any concerns about this change, please don’t hesitate to approach me.

Kind Regards,

Miss Harvey

In COGS we have been learning about how people in Bangladesh prepare for and survive cyclones. Parents, ask your child if they can remember what we have been discussing in class. Students, share your new knowledge with someone at home!

Our first debate is next Friday the 24th of June. The topic is “Animals should be kept in Zoo’s”. We are agreeing! Good luck to our debating team!

Remember to bring in your plastic bottles on Friday. They need to be in a plastic bag labelled with your name.

NOTE: Please remove the labels on the 1.25L bottles if you can, it would be most appreciated. :)

We have been working very hard on writing sentences that are written corretly. Yesterday we were given a picture to give us ideas for our sentences. Some of us wrote simple, compound and complex sentences! Have a look at our wonderful work.

Sarah: It started to rain, so they could not go to the park.
Siena: They are at the restaurant, though their food is taking a long time.
Tamara: After the children had finished playing with the frisbee, their mother told them they had to go.
Pierce: When they arrived at their house, they started talking about which school they were going to go to.
Lily: After the kids arrived back home, it was lunch time.
Mason: The two kids are going to the oval to play soccer.
Liam: The twins are going to their grandparents house, because their house is infested with bugs.
Alyssa: It is nearly Winter, so they are going to the park for the last time.
Nicholas: They had so much fun, until the girl started vomiting from the Rotor.
Bradley: Though it started to rain, the two friends still had fun outside playing frisbee.
Lara: When the boy and girl came out of the car, the girl had a flower on her head.

Exposition: Going outside is better than playing on the computer.
by Bradley

A computer is electronic. Outside there is a big space. A computers normally small. There are three main reasons why going outside to play is better than playing on the computer.

Firstly outside gets you fit. Outside you get to run around, rollin grass, play frisby and lots more. When you play outside it gets you fitter. When you are fit you get more energy.

Secondly playing on the computer gets you lazy. Everytime you go on the computer you get lazier. It also can hurt your eyes. It can make you wake up late for school also you can get fat on the computer.

Finally outside you have more space. When you go outside theres heaps of space to play but when you go on the computer theres basically no room to play. Outside theres places you can go like the oval, stadium and lots more you can run, jog or walk but playing on a computer you could not even walk ten mentres.

I definitely believe that going outside to play is better than playing on the computer because outside you get fit, playing on the computer gets you lazy and outside you have more space to play.

A fantastic effort Bradley! :)

Beginning of an Information Report: Tsunamis
by Pierce

A Tsunami is a natural disaster. The category of a Tsunami is geological. Tsunamis are giant ocean waves that are strong and powerful. Tsunamis travel a long distance and they knock down everything in their way.

Tsunamis start when the tectonic plates under the sea bed move. When the tectonic plate clam into eachother it causes an earthquake which cause a volcano. It pushes the water up.

A great effort Pierce! :)

Compound Sentences:

Jessica: My dog is very small, but she can still jump high. I jumped in a pile of leaves, and I hurt myself.

Lily: Jess has an appointment at two o’clock, so she must leave early. Jake snores loud, so it is hard for me to sleep at night.

Miguel: I had to help my mum, or I couldn’t go to play with my friend.

Complex Sentences:

Sarah: I waited in the hall, while my sister was in the bathroom. I practiced my routine, before going on stage.

Jack C: I went to the beach, while my sister went to the city. I was playing on the xbox, before I went to the park.

Ellenor: I made a shopping list, before i went shopping. I said sorry, although i didn’t do anything wrong.

We are currently researching information to write an Information Report on an animal. I will post some of these reports when they are written.

It is fantastic to be handing out more and more mini merits, however, I am  now having difficulty keeping track of who is recieving them. I can no longer post the mini merit winners on the blog, hopefully your children will tell you when they have recieved one! :)

Welcome to Term 2!!

I will start by sending my apologies for not keeping up to date with the blog, I have had some issues with the internet at home. I will try to keep up to date this term.

This term we are learning about natural disasters. We will be exploring how natural disasters are caused and what effects they have on people and communities. At the end of the unit, students will be excited to hear that they will be participating in some experiments. Students will be making their own volcano and cyclone. A note will be sent home soon asking if you could save two plastic 1.25 L bottles with the lids and one small (approx 600ml) plastic drink bottle for the students to bring in to school toward the end of the term. These bottles will be used in the experiments mentioned above.

Homework this term follows a similar format to last term, however the reading task has changed slightly and students have the responsibility of writing their own spelling words onto their sheet each week. Homework is still given out on Monday and returned to school on Friday.

I have been focussing a lot on sentence structure recently. The students have been reviewing  how to stucture simple and compound sentences and have been provided with many opportunities to practice. I will post some sentences that the students have written on the blog. Please encourage your child to write sentences at home and ask them to show you how they construct a compound sentence. We will be learning more about complex sentences in the weeks to come.

As you are aware Year 5 sat their Language Conventions and Writing NAPLAN tests yesterday and are sitting their Reading test today. Tomorrow (Thursday) they will complete their numeracy test.

Every Wednesday for PE this term, Sportspro will be coming to school to go though athletics skills with each class. This is great preparation for the upcoming althletics carnival.

Just a reminder that next Thursday (19th May) is our Cross Country.

I am looking forward to the rest of Term 2, I am sure 4/5 will have an enjoyable term.
